The used car minefield

April 05, 2011 :: Posted by - Ian :: Category - General

Buying a used car is a minefield. Even if you have a HPI check done on the vehicle there is no real way to check the vehicles history. Those 45,000 miles on the clock may have been wound back, the car may have been used as a taxi in Beirut, the car might have a pulled a steam engine every weekend to shows across the country and its engine might be ready to give up the ghost.

For those who like to take a chance, choosing a private vehicle can save some money. However for those who want to play it safe it’s best to buy from an approved dealer. They will give you a warrenty so you can take the car back if it breaks down on you on the way home.

‘AWARENESS’ COURSES COULD PROP UP SPEED CAMERAS

November 28, 2010 :: Posted by - Ian :: Category - General

Funding for speed cameras could be propped up by revenue from courses offered to offenders instead of prosecution.
The plans, drawn up by the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) would help to prop up the nation’s speed cameras in the wake of sharp spending cuts by the coalition government.

Under current ACPO guide lines, people who have broken the limit by up to 10 per cent plus 6mph (that’s 39mph in a 30mph zone or 72mph in a 60mph zone, can be offered a £100-pound speed awareness course in lieu of a fine and points – provided they haven’t already attended one in the past three years.

Around 30,000 offenders a year currently take part, potentially generating £3 million in extra annual revenue.

While Americans still settle for the 200-horspower Audi A3, our counterparts in Europe have had the option of buying its higher-performance stablemate, the S3 for quite some time. While an RS 3 variant has long been rumored, it has never surfaced from the four-ringed factory; that is until now.

Beginning in early 2011, Audi will start shipping the RS 3 Sportback, a faster, more developed version of the luxurious hatchback that shares its architecture with the Volkswagen Golf. While the A3 and S3 are both powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged direct injection four-cylinder, the S3 having a slightly larger turbo and intercooler, the RS 3 will get the same 2.5-liter turbocharged direct-injection five-cylinder found in the TT-RS.

The five-cylinder will not only provide the appropriate rally-car roar, but roughly 340-horspower and 332 pound-feet of torque. The RS3 will pull off 0-60 mph in 4.6 seconds according to Audi, and in accordance with the infamous “gentleman’s agreement,” the car will be electronically limited to 155 mph.
